Permoafrica Centre is a permaculture and regenerative farming training centre located in Homa Bay County, Kenya. Our mission is to teach farmers regenerative agricultural practices so that they can provide a livelihood for their families while they reverse desertification, sequester carbon and restore biodiverse ecosystems.
The Permoafrica Story
Permoafrica was established in 2016 by Paul Ogola for the benefit of African farmers and villagers.
Paul Ogola comes from a village in Kenya, a country where 80% of the food is grown by smallholders and subsistence farmers.
Climate change was increasing the amount of pressure that his community was experiencing. The conventional farming practices people were using were proving to be increasingly unsuccessful, and they were facing chronic water and food shortages.
In order to put food on the table, villagers would cut down local trees and forest, turn this wood into charcoal and sell the charcoal. This practice created ecological devastation in the area where they lived, but it was necessary for survival. Young people would often leave and head to the cities for a 'better life', where they would end up at the bottom of the urban heap.
Paul started looking online for alternatives. He discovered that there were communities similar to his own that had used Permaculture methods and agro-ecological practices to turn their lives around. He travelled to Uganda, where he studied Permaculture and regenerative agriculture with Steven Jones.
Paul returned to his village and began teaching regenerative farming techniques to his fellow villagers.
After seven years not only were local villagers producing more than enough food for themselves, they were selling food at a profit. They had begun to work to ensure that they had a strong watershed and a well-hydrated landscape by building ponds and swales. They are actively replanting the forest that they once cut down for income. They had begun to revive traditional African farming practices, which they combined with other traditions in order to create hybrid approaches to food growing. These practices reverse desertification, creating landscapes that actively sequester carbon.
In order to extend his work to other villages, Paul founded Permoafrica.
